Unlocking Raiser’s Edge: Moving from Static Data to Agentic AI

For non-profits, higher education, and healthcare foundations, Blackbaud’s Raiser’s Edge (RE NXT) is the undisputed center of gravity for donor data. But as Artificial Intelligence reshapes how businesses operate, many fundraising leaders are asking a critical question: Is our Raiser’s Edge data stuck in the past, or can we leverage it with modern AI?

The short answer: You absolutely can. But getting there requires understanding the difference between Blackbaud’s internal tools and custom AI architectures.

Internal AI vs. External Integration

1) Does Raiser's Edge have internal AI?

Yes. Blackbaud has heavily invested in its "Intelligence for Good" umbrella. Within RE NXT, you will find built-in predictive analytics—such as likelihood to give, wealth ratings, and suggested ask amounts. These are excellent "out-of-the-box" tools.

However, they are closed systems. If you want a custom LLM (like Gemini or ChatGPT) to draft personalized proposals based on your unique organizational voice, or if you want AI to dynamically converse with your donor database, you must link to external AI.

The API Connection: This is done via Blackbaud’s SKY API or NXT API. The APIs allows you to extract constituent data, gift histories, and action tracks, securely feeding them into custom data warehouses or AI models.

LLM

AI from Blackbaud

  • Built-In AI and ChatChat for Blackbaud AI: Allows users to query donor data using natural language, summarize giving histories, and generate personalized donor outreach.

  • Strategy Assistant: Provides intelligent benchmark tiles and data-driven insights directly on the Raiser's Edge NXT home page.

  • Development Agent: Operates as an agentic AI tool designed to help scale donor relationships and streamline mid-tier donor cultivation.

2) Bridge: Power Platform, Co-Pilot and Power BI

You don't necessarily need to build a custom application from scratch. Microsoft’s Power Platform (Power Automate, Power Apps) has certified connectors for Raiser’s Edge NXT.

By pushing RE data through Power Automate into Power BI, you establish a robust semantic layer. Once the data is in the Microsoft ecosystem, you can seamlessly layer on Azure OpenAI or Microsoft Copilot. This separates the functional CRM work (done in RE) from the advanced analytics and AI work (done in Azure/Power BI), keeping your core donor database safe and clean. There is also a Co-Pilot integration.

3) Data warehouse

May organizations also have data pulled into data warehouses for existing applications and reporting. Connecting that to your LLM would work very well.

The Future: 5 Ideas for Agentic Reporting

Once your RE data is accessible to an LLM, you can move past static dashboards into Agentic Reporting—where autonomous AI agents actively monitor data, reason through it, and deliver proactive insights without being prompted.

Here are 5 ways you can use agentic AI with your Raiser’s Edge output:

  1. Proactive Major Gift Officer (MGO) Briefings: An AI agent monitors the database overnight. Every morning, it generates a personalized brief for each MGO, highlighting which of their assigned prospects interacted with a recent email, had a wealth event, or gave to a related cause, complete with a drafted outreach email.

  2. Automated Anomaly Detection: Instead of waiting for the end-of-month reconciliation, an AI agent constantly scans daily gift batches. If it notices a sudden 15% drop in recurring giving or a spike in lapsed donors, it automatically alerts the Director of Annual Giving with a summary of the root cause.

  3. Frictionless Board Deck/Proposal Generation: An agent retrieves the latest campaign totals, fund balances, and major gift pipeline stages from RE, synthesizing them into a narrative executive summary and formatting it directly into a PowerPoint presentation for the board.

  4. Campaign Sentiment Correlation: By combining RE gift data with unstructured data from your email marketing tool, an agent can report on the exact messaging themes (e.g., "scholarships" vs. "capital projects") that are driving the highest conversion rates this week.

  5. Dynamic Donor Journey Prescriptions: Rather than static reporting, the AI analyzes a mid-level donor's 5-year giving history and event attendance, outputting a specific, multi-step cultivation prescription for the next 90 days to upgrade them to a major donor.

📌 Key Takeaway

You don't need to abandon Raiser's Edge to achieve cutting-edge AI capabilities. By leveraging the SKY API and the Power Platform, you can transform RE from a static system of record into the engine that powers proactive, agentic AI workflows.
